Gov. Tony Ever Announces He Will Not Seek Reelection

Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers announced yesterday he will not seek reelection for a third (four-year) term in 2026. While the Governor’s decision was not necessarily a surprise, now that an official announcement has been made, the frenzy of potential Democratic gubernatorial candidates coming forward to replace Evers will begin. In fact, it already has, as several high-profile Democrats have revealed or at least hinted at their intention to run. Here are the potential top candidates on the Democratic side:
  • Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez
  • WI Attorney General Josh Kaul
  • Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley
  • State Sen. Kelda Roys (D-Madison)
  • WI Secretary of State Sarah Godlewski
  • Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson
On the Republican side of the 2026 governor’s race, New Berlin businessman Bill Berrien and Washington County Exec Josh Schoemann, have formally announced their gubernatorial bids. Wisconsin Congressman Tom Tiffany is also considering running for the GOP nomination.
