Message from the WEDA Board Chair, Rebecca Deschane

Connected for Growth, United for Impact

As I reflect back on the 2026 Governor’s Conference, the excitement of reconnecting with familiar faces was matched by the enthusiasm of welcoming new members and first-time attendees.  It reminded me of something fundamental about who we are as economic developers: our greatest strength isn’t just what we build, it’s how we build it, and who we build it with.

Whether it was the full room at the Academy Session, the ED WOW luncheon, the exhibition hall, or during a conference session, I was struck by the energy in the room. These moments captured everything I believe about WEDA’s potential: we are a community that grows stronger every time we expand our circle.

The conversations at this year’s conference also reinforced that Wisconsin is not waiting on the future. We are leading into it. From our Tech Hub designation to groundbreaking discoveries emerging from our universities, from the rise of AI and data centers to the continued evolution of industries that have long defined our state, opportunity is alive and well across Wisconsin. And as economic developers, we know that navigating that opportunity, including the moments when things don’t go as planned, is what we do best. Adaptability isn’t a setback; it’s our superpower.

And our superpower is multiplied when we stay Connected for Growth, United for Impact. Being connected means leveraging the incredible network of professionals, communities, and organizations that make WEDA what it is. Being united means channeling that network toward shared goals.

As we move forward with the implementation phase of the 2026-2028 WEDA Strategic Plan, I’m excited to see how we leverage our collective efforts to foster meaningful growth and development across the Great State of Wisconsin. With our members at the core, this plan will position WEDA as the premier voice for economic development in Wisconsin and:

  • Clarify WEDA’s priorities and statewide value
  • Align the Board, Staff, and Partners around shared goals
  • Enhance member experiences and ensure high-quality training and professional development
  • Increase WEDA’s visibility and advocacy impact

Harnessing the momentum from the 2026 Governor’s Conference and the new strategic plan, we are ready to drive sustainable growth and lasting impact. Let’s stay connected, remain united, and move forward boldly, harnessing our collective expertise, enthusiasm, and vision to shape an even stronger Wisconsin.

Best regards,

Rebecca
