State of the Association: WEDA President & CEO Melissa Hunt
I’m thrilled to greet you in this WEDA Wire as President & CEO of the Wisconsin Economic Development Association. It’s been a strong start, and I’m incredibly energized by the momentum we’re building together.
June was packed with highlights. We kicked things off with an outstanding Basic Economic Development Course, thank you to our fantastic instructors and engaged participants for making it a success! Shortly after, we celebrated WEDA’s 50th Anniversary with a memorable Golf Outing and Dinner. It was a powerful reflection on WEDA’s legacy and future, and a great reminder of the incredible people who make this organization thrive. Whether you joined us on the green or at the table, I truly appreciated seeing so many of you there.

Looking ahead, we’re gearing up for the Fall Best Practices Conference in Oshkosh, September 24–26. Mark your calendars! We’re curating engaging sessions, dynamic speakers, and actionable takeaways that reflect your feedback and the evolving landscape of economic development across Wisconsin.
On August 14, WEDA’s Young Professional Engagement Network (YPEN) will host its Annual Summer Community Event in Oshkosh. This year’s event features a downtown tour, redevelopment highlights, and plenty of opportunities to connect with fellow professionals. It’s a fantastic way to experience economic development in action and have some fun along the way!
On the advocacy front, I’m eager to support and engage in the continued efforts of our Legislative Committee as we head into the new fiscal year.
As always, Michael Welsh, James Otterstein (Committee Chair), and the entire team have shown tremendous dedication in leading WEDA’s legislative and budget advocacy this year. I’m deeply grateful for their leadership and for the stories and insights you all continue to share. Your voices are instrumental in shaping policies that strengthen Wisconsin’s communities and economy.
In the months ahead, Michael and I will also be hitting the road for the WEDA Listening Tour. We’re eager to connect with you, hear your ideas, and ensure WEDA remains responsive to your needs. Watch for dates and locations, we can’t wait to see you!
