Top Wisconsin Election Races Too Close to Call in Latest Marquette University Poll

The latest Marquette University Law School Poll, which was conducted Oct. 24 through Nov. 1 and released on Nov. 2, shows extremely tight races at the top of the ticket, including the Governor’s race between incumbent Tony Evers (D) and Tim Michels (R), as well as the U.S. Senate contest between Wisconsin Lt. Governor Mandela Barnes and incumbent Sen. Ron Johnson (R). Please find below highlights of the poll:

Wisconsin Governor’s Race:

  • Wisconsin Voters’ Preference for Governor (among likely voters):
    • Governor Tony Evers (Democrat): 48%
    • Tim Michels (Republicans): 48%
    • Joan Beglinger (Independent): 2%

NOTE: Joan Beglinger ended her gubernatorial campaign in early September and endorsed Republican candidate Tim Michels.  However, her name will remain on the November general election ballot.

In the September poll, Evers received 47%, Michels 46%, and Beglinger 4%.

    • Favorable: 44%
    • Unfavorable: 46%
    • Haven’t heard enough: 6%
    • Don’t know: 4%
  • Michels Favorability:
    • Favorable: 39%
    • Unfavorable: 39%
    • Haven’t heard enough: 16%
    • Don’t know: 5%

Wisconsin U.S. Senate Race:

  • Wisconsin Voters’ Preference for U.S. Senate(among likely voters):
    • Senator Ron Johnson (Republican): 50%
    • Governor Mandela Barnes (Democrat): 48%

In the September poll, Johnson received 52% and Barnes 46%

  • Johnson Favorability:
    • Favorable: 43%
    • Unfavorable: 46%
    • Haven’t heard enough: 7%
    • Don’t know: 3%
  • Barnes Favorability:
    • Favorable: 40%
    • Unfavorable: 44%
    • Haven’t heard enough: 11%
    • Don’t know: 4%

Issue Polling:

The poll also surveyed voters on the question of whether the state is headed in the right direction or on the wrong track. The poll found the following:

  • Right direction: 34%
  • Wrong track: 58%
  • Don’t know: 8%

This poll also asked how Wisconsinites felt about certain topics. Here are the results:

    • Very Concerned: 68% and Somewhat Concerned: 24%
  • Public schools
    • Very Concerned: 62% and Somewhat Concerned: 28%
  • Crime
    • Very Concerned: 57% and Somewhat Concerned: 28%
  • Gun violence
    • Very Concerned: 56% and Somewhat Concerned: 25%
  • Accurate vote count
    • Very Concerned: 56% and Somewhat Concerned: 17%
  • Abortion policy
    • Very Concerned: 52% and Somewhat Concerned: 26%
  • Taxes
    • Very Concerned: 48% and Somewhat Concerned: 36%
  • Illegal immigration
    • Very Concerned: 40% and Somewhat Concerned: 29%
  • Coronavirus
    • Very Concerned: 16% and Somewhat Concerned: 36%
